A More Engaging Homepage

To increase engagement, we wanted to eliminate the number of clicks required for our guests to interact with and consume content. With that in mind, I led the creative vision for designing homepage modules that our guests could interact with, without being driven to a separate destination. Everything still had to work within the framework of our recently redesigned TV sites and allow for content modules to be swapped in and out as needed.

Custom modules for the Radio Disney homepage included:

  • Sweepstakes

  • Request a Song

  • Music Mailbag

  • Top 3

Motivations

Emma wants to know how others perceive her world and is driven by a desire to feel part of a larger group. She is interested in staying up to date on the latest trends and often emulates the idols she looks up to. She’s grown up with the internet and wants to be entertained instantly and on-the-go.

Interests

Emma likes hanging out with her friends to socialize, go shopping and listen to music. Her and her friends like to talk about the latest teen celebrity news and also have an affinity towards popular Disney Channel shows and movies (i.e. Wizards of Waverly Place, High School Musical, etc.).

Wireframes

With the recent redesign of the Disney TV sites, the goal for the Radio Disney redesign was to use the interchangeable interactive modules from the TV sites to ‘plug in’ where possible, while creating unique modules that would be necessary for the radio website.

After considering the goals of the site, the team decided to repurpose the large ‘Featured Content’ module for the top of the homepage followed by custom modules below. Additional modules or promotional placements could be swapped in or added as necessary.

With the functionality and overall layout addressed, we moved onto high-fidelity comps. Taking our target guest into consideration, we wanted to develop a look that felt trendy and cool but also mature, although not too much so. It had to look like something our aspirational tween audience felt was designed for older teen audiences. We also had to work within the Radio Disney brand guidelines to create a cohesive, consistent experience.

Music Player Pop-Out

The music player was an important element of the redesign for the engagement initiative. My team and I were tasked with creating a music player that would be collapsed on the homepage but could also "pop-out" as a stand alone player. We designed it so that our guests could do other things on their computer while keeping the Radio Disney playlist easily accessible.

comps - UI Module Interactions

We were also tasked with providing and iterating on comps for how the UI and modules would function throughout the site. Below are a few examples for some of the custom Radio Disney modules.
